Mission

"If you have a garden and
a library, you have        everything you need".
              (Cicero)

There are plenty of summer academies but what is missing is a place of experience that strives to encourage the next generation to go new ways. We live in a restless world. It is time to offer a forum for young and old to see the world with new eyes, and to discover it anew for ourselves. We need to bring people together, people who are interested in questions of the future, such as the role of man and humanity in the coming Anthropocene age. This is not a task for scientists alone, but for every thinking and reading person.

Questions about the future are not new. To recognize events and developments was always the central basic idea of antiquity. James Loeb raised questions for future generations in his Loeb Classical Library. What is man? How should one live? What can, should, and must one do to live a life of reason? These ancient queries are ones that we need to ask ourselves again today. If we explore these questions and bring them together with the ideas of sustainability and ecology, then the basic idea of this new Platonic academy is circumscribed. In this academy, however, there will be not only thinking and walking, but also drawing, baking, gardening, and carving. If James Loeb's legacy, the James Loeb Classical Library tells us one thing, it is this: Being human is not a birthright, but a mission.

Greetings and a warm welcome from the mayor of Murnau:

"As mayor of the market town of Murnau, I would like to welcome you to our town. The market town of Murnau has a long tradition in the field of cultural exchange. For many decades, the Goethe Institute, which greatly shaped the town in its cosmopolitanism, had a headquarter in Murnau. Three years ago, we entered into a development partnership with a region in Ghana. I supported the European Alpine Academy very early on because its objectives correlate excellently with the values of Murnau, as a place of international encounters. The idea of the EAA to provide students from all over the world with excellent German language skills and to inspire and guide them to think in new ways about sustainable models for the future is supported in its entirety by the market of Murnau. Murnau also focuses on sustainability and always tries to break new ground. For example, we have introduced an innovative local bus system.

I look forward to your visit and wish you an interesting and inspiring time in Murnau, with its impressive nature".

Rolf Beuting M.A.
First Mayor
